When Siabhor started to wake, his muscles jerked as though he were still running. Then his eyes opened to darkness and he struggled to rise, fearing he had already died. A stinging ran across his chest, telling him he was still alive. His sharp bark of pain disturbed a sleeping mass near him. In the dark the silver-grey unicorn walked slowly towards him. “Siabhor, are you okay?”

He looked up, his sight blurry at first, then the grey blur became sharper. “What am I doing here?” He growled.

“Sundance found you, you were nearly dead.” Alina replied, as Siabhor tenderly inspected his wounds. “What happened to you?”

Siabhor grunted. “Siabhor was not welcome.” He replied shortly, wincing with pain and with memories of his old pack chasing him down, then added. “But Siabhor be fast, yes, I managed to get away.”

“Well, you are safe now. The wounds are healing.” Alina added, it had been a tentative moment when they carried the mallus into the Valley. People had crowded about them, trying to see what they had brought. Autumn was furious when he saw the creature here again, but after a persuasive conversation with Alina, he had warily agreed to let the mallus stay under the grey mare’s protection.

Further down the Valley, the Gardyn families had set up camp and most were fast asleep under canvas, or open air, but one fire still burnt to dimly throw light on several shadowy figures. Samantha was almost falling asleep on Tobias’ shoulder, and Jillis’ head would keep nodding, but the Lord Mgair had insisted upon this late night council to privately discuss their immediate plans. In the flickering circle of firelight, they were joined by those of importance or their representatives.

After a very long-winded and overly-important introduction to the council, Lord Mgair continued straight into the first line of business.

“Now, one big problem is transport, for messengers initially, and then for battle. We have very few horses; and carts cannot move through such thick forest. It would be a slow process to get horses honestly, and more expensive than we can currently afford. But, there is an outpost for soldiers about fifteen miles from the main city, the Gardyn will raid there as soon as we have enough trained people to go. But for now...”

“Why don’t we go now? I’ll take a couple of others, then the unicorns will help round the horses once they’re loose. If we wait too long the whole Enchenian army will be assembled.” Tobias interrupted in a low voice.

Lord Mgair glared at Tobias, disgruntled that the boy not only interrupted him, but that he dared to speak at all in such a council.

“Yes, you may be right.” A solid-looking man on Mgair’s right said musingly. “Speed and secrecy will be our greatest weapons. We should act now.”

Mgair sat, looking thoughtfully now the idea had been backed by someone worthy of respect. But he would not sway to Tobias willingly. “Yes, yes, your point is well-made. Rian is already here isn’t he? Well, he knows the layout of the place, if he takes his cousin.
